Growing a little human is one of the most incredible things your body can do — but let's be real, it can also feel like everything you love is suddenly on the "check with your doctor first" list. Brow lamination is one of those things a LOT of pregnant clients ask us about, so we wanted to write a thorough, honest answer right here. 🤍
The short answer? It's not a straightforward yes or no — and anyone who tells you it definitely is one or the other isn't giving you the full picture. Here's everything you need to know so you can make the best decision for YOU.
What's Actually IN a Brow Lamination Treatment?
To understand whether brow lamination is safe during pregnancy, it helps to understand what the treatment actually involves.
Brow lamination is a 3-step chemical process:
Step 1 — Activating Lotion: A solution that softens and breaks down the bonds in the brow hair so they can be reshaped. This is the main chemical step.
Step 2 — Fixing Lotion: Sets the hairs in their new lifted position and locks the shape in place.
Step 3 — Nourishing Lotion: Rehydrates and conditions the brow hairs after the chemical process.
The solutions used are applied directly to the brow hairs and the skin beneath them. While the chemical exposure is relatively small and localised (it's just your brows, not a full head of hair!), the products do come into contact with your skin — and that's what makes some people cautious during pregnancy.
So Is It Safe?
Here's our honest answer: there is currently no specific research that proves brow lamination is harmful during pregnancy — but equally, there isn't enough research to definitively say it's 100% safe either.
This is true of a LOT of beauty treatments. Because pregnant women are (understandably) excluded from clinical trials, there's simply a lack of data across many cosmetic procedures.
What we DO know:
- The chemicals used in brow lamination are applied to a very small area of skin
- Absorption through the skin is minimal compared to ingesting something
- The treatment has been widely used for years with no reported issues linked to pregnancy
- HOWEVER, pregnancy can make skin more sensitive and reactive than usual, meaning there's a higher chance of irritation or an unexpected reaction
Because of all of this, the standard advice from most beauty professionals — including us — is to check with your doctor or midwife before going ahead with brow lamination during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester when baby's development is most critical.
We know that's not the definitive "yes go ahead!" answer you might have been hoping for — but we'd always rather be honest with you than just tell you what you want to hear. Your safety and your baby's safety come FIRST. 🤍
What Do Most Studios Do?
Most reputable lash and brow studios — including LBA Lashes — will ask clients to provide a doctor's approval letter, and ask you to sign a waiver acknowledging you've done so.
This isn't us being overly cautious or turning you away — it's us taking your wellbeing seriously, which is exactly what you want from a studio you trust.
If your doctor or midwife gives you the green light, we are absolutely happy to go ahead! We'll also take extra care during your treatment to minimise skin contact with the solutions as much as possible.
What About the First Trimester Specifically?
The first trimester (weeks 1–12) is generally considered the most sensitive period of pregnancy, as this is when the baby's major organs and systems are developing. Most beauty professionals and healthcare providers tend to be MORE cautious about chemical treatments during this stage.
After the first trimester, many women find their doctor or midwife is more comfortable giving the go-ahead for low-risk cosmetic treatments — but again, this is a conversation to have with YOUR healthcare provider, as every pregnancy is different.
Are There Any Pregnancy-Safe Alternatives?
Yes! If you'd rather skip brow lamination during pregnancy but still want gorgeous brows, here are some great options we can offer at LBA Lashes:
🌿 Brow Sculpt (wax and tidy) — a clean-up and shaping of your natural brows with hot wax. No chemicals involved, just beautifully groomed brows. This is a great option throughout pregnancy.
🌿 Hybrid Brow Dye — our brow tinting service to darken and define your brows. We recommend checking with your doctor on this one too as it involves dye, but many clients continue tinting throughout pregnancy with their doctor's approval.
🌿 Brow Styling at home — we can recommend brow products and show you techniques to brush and set your brows at home for a lamination-like look, totally chemical-free!
What About After Birth — Can I Get Brow Lamination While Breastfeeding?
This is another great question we get asked a lot! The same principle applies — there isn't definitive research either way on chemical beauty treatments during breastfeeding. Many beauty professionals recommend waiting until after you've finished breastfeeding to be completely safe, while others are comfortable going ahead with their doctor's approval.
Again — chat to your healthcare provider, and we'll follow their guidance. 🤍
